A B-double truck carrying a hazardous load has erupted in flames, shutting down a major motorway and evacuating an area south of Brisbane.

The incident happened on the Logan Motorway near the Kingston exit eastbound at Loganlea just after 8pm.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said eight crews were at the scene working to extinguish the fire.

The motorway was closed in both directions and an exclusion zone was in place.

Westbound lanes reopened later in the night.

Residents were urged to keep doors and windows shut.

A fire spokeswoman said the fire was extinguished at 9.20pm.

“Crews remain on site dampening down,” the spokeswoman said.

“It’s going to take a while to fully dampen it down.”

The spokeswoman added that the truck was carrying hazardous material.

“Scientific crews are trying to work out exactly what it was, but it was a hazardous load on the truck,” she said.

According to a Queensland ambulance spokesman, the driver of the truck was taken to Logan Hospital in a stable condition for observation.

Police declared an exclusion zone under the Public Safety Preservation Act due to hazardous smoke.

It covered a stretch of the Logan Motorway including the Wembley Rd off-ramp and on-ramp, Station Rd on-ramp and Kingston Rd.

Diversions were in place eastbound on the Logan Motorway.

Motorists and members of the public were advised to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone were asked to remain indoors and close their windows until further notice.
