An exclusion zone has been established in a suburb south of Brisbane after shots were fired at police tracking an allegedly stolen car.

Police say that officers, including via POLAIR, started tracking an allegedly stolen Suzuki Vitara in the Browns Plains area just before 7pm on Friday night.

Tyre spikes were used and the car came to a stop. But police say that as they approached the vehicle shots were fired and a pursuit commenced.

Inspector Laurie Shelvin said the vehicle had remained stationary for 20 minutes after the tyres were deflated.

“Police at this point moved in to apprehend the offender, at which time it is alleged the offender produced a short firearm from the drivers side window and discharged one round towards the police officers,” he said.

No-one was injured.

Inspector Shelvin said the police pursued the car as it took off at speed, and two more rounds were fired at police.

He said it was too dangerous for the pursuit to continue.

The Suzuki was found abandoned near Central Court, Hillcrest, around 8.20pm and the driver fled into a waiting stolen Kia Cerato.

That vehicle was tracked to an address at Bix Court at Crestmead around 8.40, where police negotiators remained on the scene late on Friday night.

Police declared an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Prevention Act, with members of the public urged to avoid the area.

SERT officers and negotiators were called in and were still negotiating with a person of interest just before midnight.

An exclusion was established with boundaries encompassing Chambers Flat Rd, Waratah Drive and Augusta St, including Crestmead Park.
