Peta Credlin: Labor ‘hypocrisy’ over transgender prisoners in women's jails

Conservative state leaders have banned transgender inmates from women's prisons while South Australia's Labor Premier dismisses concerns as 'niche' despite assault claims, writes Peta Credlin.

Last week, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas fronted up to a White Ribbon event, tweeting his concern about violence against women. Talk is cheap and hypocrisy, thy name is Labor! After all, it was only a few days earlier that the Premier said banning biological men from women’s prisons was a “niche issue”.

Well, it’s not so niche to the four SA women who have gone public claiming they have been sexually abused by transgender prisoners; some even locked in with them at night.

This spinelessness from Malinauskas surprised me as I have pegged him to be smarter politically than Victoria’s Jacinta Allan who, like most of Labor, supports this madness.

Is it because we’re talking about prisoners that he doesn’t give a fig; or is it because, under the new Labor paradigm, the rights of men calling themselves women trump the rights of women born that way?

Imagine if a man on the political Right described calls to prevent the rape of women a “niche issue”?

Women in prison have nowhere to run, so if Malinauskas won’t defend women at their most vulnerable, then when will he?

Give me the “Darwin directness” of NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, who said, “There should be no men in women’s prisons, full stop. I can tell you now, here in the NT, there are no blokes in women’s jails and we’re not having that here, not on my watch.”

Congratulations too to Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff, who banned trans-identifying male prisoners from women’s prisons there after a father who raped his own three-year-old daughter demanded to be placed in a women’s prison.

How is it that it’s only conservative governments that are willing to stand up for the rights of women? Has Labor become a party of misogynists?
