Peter Goers: If the ‘Yes’ vote fails in the same-sex marriage plebiscite, Australia will be a laughing stock

PETER Goers reveals his great fear about the same-sex marriage vote.

Unravelling the traditional wedding

Fear is trumping love. I’m so fearful that the “No” vote will win the same-sex marriage plebiscite and fear will rule.

Two people of the same sex who love each other and want to get married must be hated. It’s become not about love but about political correctness, freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Two people of the same sex who are allowed to get married will kill Christmas. What?

I’m worried. If the postal survey fails, Australia will be the laughing stock of the world and we may never have marriage equality.

It’s far from inevitable. Remember, an Australian republic was supposedly inevitable and yet we’re further away from it than ever.

Bill Shorten’s Labor are tub-thumping for marriage equality but they did nothing to advance the cause while in office for two terms – in fact, they put the issue back.

Should the postal survey fail and should Labor be elected, it will have no mandate to give us same-sex marriage. The polls have consistently shown the “Yes” case ahead (although its dipped a bit this week) but polls showed the disastrous Brexit would fail and that the vulgarian Trump would not lead the free world.

I signed up to all the anti-marriage equality groups to monitor them and I get up to 10 emails a day asking for money, Apparently, denying same-sex marriage is an issue of freedom.

Lyle Shelton, of the Australian Christian Lobby, says there’s very little homophobia in Australia. He is Captain Heterosexual. How the hell would he know?

Young gay people are at great risk of suicide and self-harm. Praying the gay away doesn’t help.

Family Voice (formerly the Festival of Light) has championed the view of former American gay porn actor and now celibate Christian Joseph Sciambra. In his book, Swallowed by Satan, he writes that “Satan is born out of the anuses of homosexual men”. Really? Well, now we know.

They want us to take this seriously?

The argument against same-sex marriage seems to be that it has nothing to do with love but everything to do with the constraint of freedoms enjoyed by heterosexuals.

Be afraid. Be very afraid, Heterosexuals are superior. Only they deserve marriage. Religion sanctions heterosexuality and also slavery. Religion is only nuptial window-dressing. No-one is actually married until you sign a civil document making it legal.

Freedom of religion and freedom of speech cannot be constrained by same-sex marriage. We have potent laws protecting those rights and laws protecting us against discrimination on the basis of sex and sexuality.

Religious organisations are exempt from some of those laws so they don’t have to employ a brilliant teacher if he is homosexual. So how does same-sex marriage change anything?

Marriage has never been less popular. Same-sex marriage is a huge vote of confidence for marriage. I know people whose religious objection I respect but I’ve yet to meet a single married couple who feel their union is compromised by loving people of the same sex who want to ply their troth in marriage.

Not so long ago, interracial marriage was illegal and scandalous. Divorce carried enormous stigma. No-fault divorce was seen (and is still seen by some reactionaries) as a great social ill. Couples who lived together without benefit of clergy and produced bastards were socially persecuted.

Now, every second wedding seems to involve the children of the nuptial couple gambolling in the wedding party.

Family is very fluid. No family is ideal. Jesus was raised successfully by a man – not his biological father.

The “No” case is homophobic. If the “Yes” case wins, same-sex marriage is back in the thrall of politicians, some of whom love fear more than love.
