Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services will fly a team of five staff and volunteers to Queensland Thursday to assist the region devastated by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The deployment comes after the Queensland government formally requested assistance from all Australian jurisdictions, as conditions from the system began to ease.
The system, which made landfall north of Brisbane on March 8, carried with it strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Flooding impacted residential streets, and heavy winds thrashed homes and knocked down power lines as it crossed the east coast.
The deployment comes less than a month after the NTFES flew 17 members to Western Australia to help fight a number of blazes in the regions south, as well as a seven-strong crew to North Queensland the week earlier to help in flood recovery efforts.
In early February, NTFES sent three members to Victoria to help contain two major fires burning in the Grampians.
Scheduled to fly to Brisbane on Thursday, the team, consisting of five volunteers from Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, are expected to provide the emergency crews, residents and the region with relief and recovery efforts.
Acting NTFES Commissioner Collene Bremner said the volunteers were more than happy to step up and assist.
“Our thoughts are with all of those on the front line of this sustained response and those residents impacted by this weather event,” she said.
“The four volunteers and one staff will have boots on the ground by Thursday night and assist with a range of tasks that they’re well prepared and experienced in delivering.”
“Many of these individuals put their personal lives on hold to assist communities, as well as others in need during times of crisis.”
She thanked everyone involved in the recovery efforts and said it served as a reminder of the crucial role that volunteers played in the community.
