Territorians interested in a career with the NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) will have the chance to “try before they apply” in March.
As part of the lead-up to the June 2025 recruitment drive, NTFRS is hosting Come and Try days in Darwin and Alice Springs.
The Darwin event will take place at 9am on March 22 at the Foskey Pavilion, Darwin Show Grounds, while the Alice Springs session will be on March 29 at St Phillips College, also at 9am.
These hands-on events are designed to give participants a preview of the demanding Physical Aptitude Test (PAT) used in firefighter recruitment.
This test assesses both fitness and the ability to perform real-life tasks encountered during emergency response situations, such as lifting heavy objects and handling fire hoses.
While challenging, the PAT is achievable with proper preparation, and the Come and Try days offer valuable insight and expert advice to help applicants succeed.
Firefighting in the NT is not for the faint-hearted.
It’s a physically and mentally demanding job, with no two days ever the same.
As part of a close-knit team, firefighters respond to emergencies, fight fires, educate the community, and work on fire prevention strategies.
NTFRS Chief Fire Officer Stephen Sewell said the Come and Try days help prospective firefighters prepare for the demanding physical and psychological challenges of the role.
“Becoming a Firefighter can be a challenging process, so our Come and Try days are designed to give prospective applicants an insight into the fitness components. It also provides them with enough time to ramp up their training and set new goals ahead of the next recruitment round in June,” he said.
To register for the events, prospective applicants must sign up by March 19. Links for registration are available online.
