From sourcing “wigs for every occasion”, to transforming government press conferences into dance club bangers, or even assumption that NSW residents really enjoy a G & T in isolation — Instagram and TikTok creators are rising to the challenge of laughter in lockdown.
To celebrate some of the best content coming out of Sydney’s Lockdown 2.0 or Melbourne’s Lockdown 5.0, we have compiled a list of our favourite videos in isolation.
You may have seen his dance remix take of the now infamous Scott Morrison V Andrew Probyn press conference, but creative art director and avid TikToker Jeff Van de Zandt has been rolling out the punches with Covid-comedic classics since the start of the pandemic.
The Melbourne-based content creator, who is one of millions settling in for yet another snap-lockdown said taking to social media was a way to put a stop to “doom scrolling”.
“This is my escape, it is a great way to get away from the ridiculousness of the situation we are in,” he said. “Finding humour in all of this doom and gloom is such a great way for people to connect.”
The social star, who has seen a constant rise in his following online said there is more people taking to content creating than ever before: “which is great”.
“I have been doing this for some time now and while so many people will send me content to try out, I know that what works for me is when I personally find something funny,” Mr Van de Zandt said. “I don’t like to put too much thought behind what I am making, if it makes me laugh, I will work with it.”
With more than 1.3 million likes on his TikTok content, Mr Van de Zandt said he has come to acquire his own “Wig Guy” — Trent Ashley — who sources the incredible wigs featured in the reels, including the latest one used in his impressions of NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
“My political angle is rarely very serious, it takes the hint of the situation that is going on and runs with it,” he said. “I’d prefer not to get involved in political theories and conspiracies often posted by people on my content.
“I’d rather just make people laugh.”
The Instagram and TikTok star said he also enjoys the comedic genius of Jimmy Rees and his takes on Australian states and territories takes on lockdown.
