From Olympic diver Sam Fricker to Australia’s answer to Bear Grylls, social media giant TikTok has named its most successful breakout Australian stars of 2021.
Since launching in 2016, TikTok has generated 800 million mainly Gen Z users worldwide, with viral videos propelling some users into the spotlight overnight.
When Australian diver Sam Fricker joined the platform for fun, he had no idea that in a matter of months he would amass 1.2 million followers and become one of the platform’s biggest success stories.
The 19-year-old garnered a huge following documenting his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, where he competed in the men’s 10 metre platform event.
He won over the community, sharing never-before-seen insights into life at the Olympics during the pandemic.
“Documenting the whole experience of getting tested and every day training by myself in the Olympic Park with my coach,” he said.
“When we arrived at the airport there were kilometres worth of testings, screenings.
“I also really enjoyed sharing all the small things like the gifts we get, the free vending machines, the 24/7 hall with any food you could want.”
The platform has also helped Sam put a spotlight on his sustainable straw business, Sam’s Straws.
“It’s been awesome to amplify, not just the product as a good solution but the importance of sustainability,” he said.
The Cronulla-based star now has big plans to continue his path to stardom on the platform by sharing unique insights into his life.
“It just shows that your dreams, your goals, they can come true,” he said.
From how to charge your phone in the wild to building an outdoor oven, Luke Falzon is Australia’s answer to Bear Grylls.
Luke is another success story of the platform, clocking up more than four million followers with his tips on how to survive in the wild.
He is joined by Walt from Queanbeyan in NSW, who has a 680,000-strong following for his scientific videos featuring a microscopic look at everything from bears to bees.
Cosplay fanatic Rhyle and busker Ula from Parramatta have also been named as the platform’s breakout stars.
