Firefighters were forced to take cover behind their trucks after multiple explosions sent projectiles into the air while they battled a house blaze in Sydney’s southwest.

More than 40 firefighters and 12 fire trucks were called to an adjoining home in Cabramatta shortly before 7pm on Tuesday night, where a garage was engulfed in flames.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it was a difficult blaze to contain.

“There was a significant risk to our firefighters who actually had to take cover behind the firetrucks until the projectile explosions finished,” Superintendent Dewberry said.

“There was significant debris out and around the front yard and on the road.

“Once that stopped, firefighters were able to move in but the home and garage were completely destroyed.”

Superintendent Dewberry said nobody was injured despite the flames jumping to nearby properties.

“The garage of the neighbouring property was damaged as was the front of that home,” he said.

“All people were accounted for.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
