A murder investigation is underway after a woman’s body was discovered in Werrington surrounded by clothes and rubbish.

A murder probe is underway after a woman’s body was found in bushland in Sydney’s west, surrounded by clothes and rubbish.

A member of the public made the shocking discovery in a reserve at Werrington, near Penrith, on Sunday afternoon and called Triple-0.

Police said the body was found in an isolated area of bushland off Irwin St, and that it was likely it had been there for some time without discovery.

Nepean Police Area Command Detective Superintendent Trent King said a passer-by made the grim discovery just after 1pm and called Triple-0.

The body, which Det-Supt King said appeared to be that of a middle-aged female, was not covered in any material, but had items of interest around it including clothing and rubbish.

“We are infancy in this investigation ... I don’t have any information about injuries,” Det-Supt King said.

Forensic specialists, detectives and the police rescue squad spent the afternoon scouring the area for clues and door knocking residents, while a search was conducted from the air by the Polair helicopter.

Residents said it was distressing to hear about a possible murder and a woman’s body being dumped in their street.

“That’s someone’s daughter, sister ... they didn’t deserve to be left in a park,” one person wrote on a local social media page.

Det-Supt King said the woman did not match any obvious missing person reported to his command.

However, he said the Missing Persons Unit were assisting detectives to see if the body matched anyone on their register.

A strike force has been set up to investigate the discovery, with the assistance of the State Crime Command Homicide Squad.

Det-Supt King said a post mortem would be carried out this week to determine how the woman died.
