A post-mortem report is delaying the case of a man accused of murdering his mother following the shocking discovery of her body in a car boot near a popular northern New South Wales holiday park.
Jeramie James Massie, now 41, had his matter mentioned in Lismore Local Court before Magistrate Michael Dakin on Wednesday.
He has been in custody for 15 months and defence counsel for Massie told the court the matter was still with police as they await a post-mortem autopsy report.
Emergency services were called to a unit on Park St in Evans Head just after 8am on March 8 last year.
Massie’s mother, Wendy Lee George, 60, was found dead in the boot of a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback near the Reflections Holiday Park.
It is alleged she was murdered between 11.30am on March 5 and 8:30am on March 8.
Police prosecutor Brett Gradisnik said in court they have had progress with the post-mortem report from the coroner, which has been attributed to holding up the case.
“We’ve had communications from the Director of the DPP who is doing a draft report,” Sgt Gradisnik said.
“The Director has been in touch with forensic medicine, and we are seeking an adjournment in order to complete the report.”
Massie, who was living at the same address as Ms George, was arrested and charged with domestic violence-related murder and improperly interfering with a corpse or human remains.
Massie’s bail remains refused.
Some staying at Reflections Holiday Park, part of which backs on to the unit block where the grim discovery was made, spoke of seeing the VW pulling up to the home just before dark on the Thursday.
Another holiday park visitor, who requested anonymity, said they saw Massie being led to a police car in handcuffs.
Mr Dakin adjourned the matter for further mention on July 16.
