Unemployed NRL star Jarryd Hayne has reported for bail a day after he was released from Cooma jail after his rape conviction was quashed.

The sportsman today arrived in Birkenstock sandals at Merrylands police station in a white VW Polo driven by a friend and left three minutes later.

Smiling, the 33-year-old nodded to waiting media as he left the police station and refused to answer questions about Monday’s court ruling overturning his conviction for raping a woman in Newcastle.

His conviction was quashed with the Court of Criminal Appeal ordering a retrial.

The court found there had been an error with directions relayed to the jury, and an error in a pre-trial ruling on evidence.

Yesterday NSW District Court Judge Chris O’Brien granted Hayne bail with strict conditions, including being of good behaviour, residing with his wife at an address in Sydney’s west, reporting to police three times a week, and not entering the Newcastle local government area.

Hayne must also pay a $20,000 surety within seven days, not apply for a passport, not go within 500 metres of any international points of departure, and not contact the complainant in the case in any way, including through a third party, or encourage others to do so.

Hayne is said to have already met his second child, who was born while he was in custody.

The trial will be the third faced by Hayne, after the first ended in a hung jury and the second ended with his now-overturned conviction.

Mr Hayne has denied assaulting the woman and says their consensual encounter ended when he injured her accidentally.

During sentence hearing proceedings in May, in repeated denials, Hayne told the court: “I didn’t do it.”

Mr Hayne will face court again on Friday.
