Hamzy gang ‘crushed’ after police arrests in Alameddine war

Ten members of the notorious Hamzy family involved in the bloody Sydney gang war with the rival Alameddine clan are now dead or in jail.

How did the Hamzy underworld feud begin?

Ten members of the notorious Hamzy family are now dead or in jail after a brutal police crackdown netted three of the crime clans senior figures this week.

After spending much of the past 18 months of the gang war on the back foot, the Hamzy clan is now on its knees with senior police sources saying they have been “crushed” in their bloody gang war with the rival Alameddine family.

Ibrahem Hamze and his cousins Tareek and Haissam Hamzy, were this week all arrested and charged with serious crimes over multiple incidents that have shaken southwest Sydney.

Tareek Hamzy, Ibrahem Hamze and Haissam Hamzy were charged this week over their alleged involvement in the ongoing gang war in Sydney’s southwest.

The trio are now behind bars on remand joining fellow senior members Bassam and Mohammed “Little Crazy” Hamzy, while their relatives Ghassan Amoun, Bilal Hamze and Mejid Hamzy are all dead.

“(They’re all) now in Silverwater or Rookwood … they’re crushed, but its impossible to feel sorry for them,” one police source said.

But not all believe the end of the feud is near, with one underworld source saying having evolved out of the notorious Brothers 4 Life gang and into the current incarnation, the Hamzy clan would not just disappear.

“No way (this is over) they don’t let sh** go the Hamzys … this is a lifetime war,” they said.

The arrests of Ibrahem Hamze, 27, and Haissam, 27, and Tareek Hamzy, 24, are significant ones for police.

Detectives have long believed it was the actions of these three relatives that started the gang war almost 18 months ago when they bashed rival Alameddine associate Shaylin Zreika on a suburban Sefton street, but were not charged.

A few days later the war escalated, with gang kingpin Mejid Hamzy gunned down at his Condell Park home.

At the time of his slaying Haissam and Tareek Hamzy were living with at the same house having been taken under Mejid’s wing.

Since then a tit-for-tat war has unfolded and while much of the attention has been on what police allege are a number of Alameddine sanctioned killings, police allege the Hamzy clan has also been involved in various attempts at retaliation.

One of them was the shooting of Murat Gulasi at World Gym in Prospect.

In a major breakthrough this week, police have now charged Ibrahem Hamze over the shooting, alleging he solicited the attempt to kill Gulasi.

His cousins Tareek and Haissam Hamzy have not been charged over that shooting and Ibrahem Hamze has not been charged in relation to any other shooting or murder.

Another serious criminal in the family is Mohammed “Little Crazy” Hamzy, who is due to get out of prison in 2023.

Hamze was arrested on Monday on the Gold Coast where he fled in the wake of Amoun’s death on January 6, aware he is in the firing line having narrowly escaped two previous attempts on his life.

In addition to the Prospect shooting he was also charged over the alleged kidnapping and stabbing of a man at Merrylands last year.

Police sources said it would be alleged that the victim of that attack had been hired to carry out another job by the Hamzy crew.

But when the man was unable to fulfil his duties he allegedly refused to respond to the crime clan and kept the money, leading Hamze and others to try and track him down.

Police have charged Hamze, Tareek and Haissam Hamzy, Ahmad and Bilal El-Chamy, Anthony Estephan and Joshua McCalla with various offences over the Merrylands kidnap.

While the rapid take-down of Hamzy members and associates is a big win for a police force who have long been under pressure to deliver the results they have promised their work is not yet done, with attention to now return to the Alameddine clan.

“There’s trouble ahead for them too,” another senior police source vowed.
