A new intensive care unit, additional surgical theatres and a larger emergency department are planned for Canterbury Hospital as part of its $350m redevelopment.

Health Minister Ryan Park and Canterbury state Labor MP Sophie Cotsis visited the facility on Monday to show the community its first look at the expansion and major upgrades under the masterplan.

That includes a purpose-built adult inpatient accommodation, expanded antenatal care, additional ambulatory and outpatient care capacity, and other clinical and non-clinical improvements to existing facilities.

It follows consultation with more than 250 patients, staff, carers, volunteers and community members.

Feedback highlighted preference for more green spaces and access to natural light, updated staff, patients and carers amenities, better accessibility, signage, and increased patient and visitor parking.

Mr Park said redevelopment would maximise the capacity of existing facilities at the hospital campus, including the main hospital building and the Canterbury Health Centre.

“We are working to deliver the healthcare infrastructure to meet the needs of this growing community,’’ he said.

“Today’s announcement is a critical next step in the delivery of this significant project. What this facility will mean will be enhanced services and more beds for Canterbury and surrounding suburbs.”

Following the completion of master planning, the project team will continue through the planning and design phases for the redevelopment, with further consultation to continue throughout the year.

The last major redevelopment of the century-old hospital took place in 1998 and growth in the Canterbury area has placed pressure on hospital services.

The Canterbury-Bankstown local government area is forecast to grow by 13 per cent in the next 12 years, with an estimated population of 443,000 by 2036.

It is also expected to have a larger proportion of elderly people, with those aged 70 years and over forecast to grow by more than 60 per cent between 2021 and 2036.

The hospital expansion also responds to the culturally diverse community – some of which have complex health needs.

“This significant redevelopment will allow improved health care access and outcomes for generations to come, both for people living in the area and for those from Greater Sydney,’’ Ms Cotsis said.

Initial construction works begins late this year while main construction begins in 2026 and is expected to conclude in 2029.
