Emergency services have cordoned off a road in southwest Sydney after a fire ignited in a suburban garage.

Fire and Rescue crews were called to an address on McPherson Ave, Punchbowl, about 3.15pm on Monday with a spokesperson confirming the blaze originated in the property’s duel-door garage.

The fire extended to the house with the spokesperson stating three crews took half an hour to get the situation under control.

Multiple NSW Police vehicles were on the scene with officers also putting up a barricade to keep nearby residents away from the fire.

One resident from the next street told The Daily Telegraph the noticed the smoke coming through towards their property before hearing a “bang”.

“I thought the [the house next door] was on fire,” the man said.

It is understood two women were inside at the time and were alerted by a smoke alarm before safely fleeing the home.

The fire came after Sydneysiders enter into a two-day heatwave with the mercury reaching the high 30s in parts of the city west with Punchbowl teetering around 34 degrees at the time the blaze broke out.
