‘We’re trying to show is our age-old stories are still relevant today’: NT’s only First Nations-led multi-arts festival to showcase culture

The contemporary vibrancy of Indigenous culture will be on show at this year’s Garrmalang Festival.

THE contemporary vibrancy of Indigenous culture will be on show at this year’s Garrmalang Festival – the Territory’s only First Nations-led multi-arts festival.

Co-creative director Nina Fitzgerald said with Central Australian act Electric Fields performing music along with a First Nations photography exhibition and First Nations producers, it was a strong local assortment of talent.

“What we’re trying to show is our age-old stories are still relevant today,” she said. “We always want to showcase local talent so we’re always looking for a really vibrant acoustic set and we’re using local artists to perform. Garrmalang is going to bring Darwin to life in vibrant and contemporary way … we have some great stories from Indigenous Australia up here so it will be great to see what we attract.”

Guitarist Jaxon De Santis will be performing at Garrmalang and said it was a great opportunity to explore and present his own story.

Garrmalang runs at the Darwin Entertainment Centre on May 29–30.
