Five female Premier League players have copped bans following a fracas after Darwin Football Stadium match

Five female Premier League players have copped bans – with one rubbed out for three years – after a post-match fight at Marrara in June.

TWO female Premier League football players from the one club involved in a post-match scuffle at Darwin Football Stadium in June have been suspended for two and three years respectively after the league handed down heavy penalties.

It comes as an 18-year-old woman will face court in September charged with assault following the fracas in the Marrara car park, which police say was an “escalation” after the June 26 game.

In a statement to the NT News, Football Northern Territory said the players’ behaviour was “detrimental to the good name of the game” and had brought the sport into disrepute, following an independent investigation.

A Hellenic player received a three-year ban, another a two-year penalty and third player received a 12-week prohibition, with four weeks suspended.

Two Port Darwin players received a 12-week ban, with four weeks suspended, and a two-year ban respectively.

Hellenic have also been deducted nine points and will receive a good behaviour bond.

Any further breaches will automatically result in a three-point deduction per offence.

However, it is unclear how long the bond will be in place for.

Football NT chief executive Bruce Stalder said any behaviour which threatened a “safe environment for all its participants” had to be dealt with.

“This behaviour will never be tolerated, it is unacceptable, unnecessary and in stark contrast to the values inherent in our game,” Stalder said.

Mr Stalder said all players could receive counselling and support, including potential enrolment in a community program to help with personal accountability and “behavioural flexibility”.

However, both clubs can appeal the penalties

Eighteen-year-old woman charged with assault after Marrara fight

AN 18-year-old woman has been charged with assault and will appear in court in September after an incident following a Division 1 Premier League match.

In a statement to the NT News, NT Police said the woman had been issued a notice to appear following a fracas after the Port Darwin and Hellenic on June 26 at Darwin Football Stadium.

The charge follows a Strike Force Lyra investigation.

Acting Sergeant Carol Maxwell said a “verbal dispute between two players escalated into a physical altercation when a third party intervened”.

“Several witnesses have come forward and provided statements to police,” Act Sgt Maxwell said.

“The investigation is continuing, however, we can repeat that there is no evidence to suggest that race or religion had anything to do with this incident.

“The altercation was an escalation from the match.”

The woman will face court on September 19 this year to face a charge of assault.

Football NT said on Wednesday it expected to hand down “potential sanctions” on the weekend.

Potential sanctions following post-match incident

FOOTBALL NT could hand down “potential sanctions” this weekend following an alleged post-match incident involving several women at Marrara in late June.

Two clubs have been drawn into a league investigation after the incident following a Division 1 Women’s Premier League match between Port Darwin and Hellenic on June 26.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as a “big mess” with multiple scuffles breaking out after the game.

Several people told the NT News three women allegedly attacked a fourth in the carpark, tearing off her head covering and ripping her dress down to her bra.

Similar accounts have been posted to social media pages, suggesting a second person was also targeted.

When asked when potential penalties could be handed down, a Football NT spokesman said on Wednesday he was “expecting a decision over the weekend”.

NT Police has also been contacted for comment.
