Upgraded Esplanade walkway to improve connectivity after plans win council tick of approval

PLANS for an upgraded Esplanade footpath were approved by Darwin Council on Tuesday night, with plans to connect the Eternal Flame to existing walkways and improve connectivity.
Engineering and City Services general manager Ron Grinsell said the new footpath would provide greater connectivity to the Esplanade and also add to its cultural elements.
“The concept design is under development for a pathway within Bicentennial Park, incorporating a new memorial walk section from the new Eternal Flame to Knuckey Street (2.4m wide),” Mr Grinsell said.
“A new section of pathway, close to the Esplanade on-street parking area, joining the existing path (to be retained) approximately halfway between Peel and Daly streets (3.2m wide), extending to Daly Street.

“The works will also include links and entry points to the Esplanade.”
The project will cost the council more than $1.5m, with funding only partially sourced for part of the concept design costings.
Mr Grinsell said the Darwin RSL would undertake consultation with various key stakeholders, including plaque owners, in any detailed design of the memorial walk section of the footpath, after the plaques were removed as part of the recent Darwin Cenotaph upgrade project.
“Should council not decide to proceed to detailed design and construction of this section of pathway, then the Darwin RSL will need to consult with plaque owners and council on any works undertaken to reinstate the plaques,” he said.

The concept design and costs are due to be completed early next month, with a report to council in February.
