A PROMINENT sports star charged with a range of violent offences including sexual assault has been kept behind bars on remand for another week while his bail application is assessed.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons will have to spend another week in remand until his next court date on Tuesday February 16.

In the hour-long bail application this morning, his lawyer Jon Tippett QC touched on the charges and an error in the processing of a Domestic Violence Order made in Alice Springs.

The man is alleged to have breached his order when he went to work and was in the same location as the complainant of the alleged breach in January.

“(He had a) genuine belief that what he was doing at the time was compliant,” he said.

Mr Tippett also explained to Judge Richard Wallace that colleagues of the man in the industry he works in would provide surety and accommodation for him while waiting for his case to process.

The man’s current girlfriend also appeared in court in support of the man.

The man was arrested on January 24 while in Darwin in relation to a matter dating back to May 2020.

“(He) hotly contests these allegations, they appear to arise out of some dispute between various parties and had initially resulted in (the man) being quite seriously assaulted ... ,” Mr Tippett told the court.

Mr Tippett said the third set of allegations, which the man was charged with on January 28, was made by the person who made the DVO breach complaint.

Prosecutor Luke McLaughlin opposed bail.

“These are vulnerable young women Your Honour, who are terrified of this man,” he said.

Judge Wallace remanded the man in custody until he could be assessed for bail.
