A LOCAL man has died from “terrible” injuries after he was thrown 100m through the air in what police have described as a tragic, high-speed accident around a notorious Howard Springs bend.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said a witness stopped after finding the motorcycle crash and alerted police.

“The 31-year-old motorcyclist was headed outbound along Gunn Point Road. It appears he’s travelling at some significant speed” he said.

“He’s left the road or failed to negotiate the bend in the road opposite the Howard Springs reserve and travelled for a distance off road, collided with a number of signs … the male suffered terrible injuries and died at the scene.”

Police notified the 31-year-old’s father before midday on Friday.

Sgt Lindner said speed was likely the main factor, with the man flying about 100m through the air after the initial hit with the kerb.

“The motorcycle has struck the kerb and been launched into the air, the nature of the crash is being investigated by Major Crash Investigations,” he said.

“Certainly speed (was a factor), he was wearing a helmet which has come off during the crash, he was unfortunately not wearing other safety riding attire but speed would certainly appear to be the cause of this crash.”

After three fatal incidents on NT roads in less than 48 hours, Sgt Lindner said Territorians always had to keep their wits about them on the road and couldn't let their guard down after the Christmas and New Year’s period.

“It’s another reminder just to take care on the roads. Speed kills, obviously (this crash) highlights the need for riders to wear proper attire,” he said.

“Part of this investigation concluded the motorcycle was unregistered, that’s being looked into as well but certainly stick to the speed limit.”

The Howard Springs and Gunn Point Road stretch was closed off between Willard and Sitella roads with a traffic diversion in place from Stow to Sitella roads, as police conducted investigations for about five hours yesterday, including drone surveillance.

Snr Sgt Lindner said investigations were still continuing with a lot of unknowns still surrounding the crash.

“We’re appealing for anyone who can assist, we don’t know what time this crash has occurred, obviously it was in the early hours of this morning or potentially even late last night,” he said.

“If there’s other circumstances which come into it they’ll come to light in due course.
