RURAL sporting life has just become more comfortable with the Southern Districts Cricket Club welcoming a new $2 million viewing platform and change rooms at their Freds Pass base.

Southern Districts Cricket Club vice-president Brett Whelan said the upgrades, completed by local business C&R Constructions would improve the community’s cricket experience.

“It’s fantastic, as a committee it’s taken 10 years for this to come about. Way back in the ’90s we envisaged something like this,” he said.

“The club started 36 years ago in the ditch and we’ve gone from the ditch to a demountable to some nice rooms to some fantastic rooms, so it’s been a natural progression.”

With brand new change rooms for the community’s sports clubs, umpires and the opposition and a brand new viewing deck, the club will now look at the best way to unveil the facility to supporters.

“The committee are definitely going to pick a day against a good opposition, maybe Palmerston as they are a good club like us and we’re both classed as being outside the Berrimah Line,” Mr Whelan said.

“A game against Palmerston would be a good opening and put on a day for everyone involved in putting this together, to get them back to say thank you.”

Litchfield mayor Maree Bredhauer said sport was a large part of the Litchfield community, with juniors and women’s teams also using the facility, and upgrades would only increase community spirit.

“It’s been a long time coming and the cricket community is very pleased, as is the Litchfield Council, to provide these excellent facilities to make Freds Pass the absolute first class facility it is,” she said.

“It brings the community together and we have the opportunity in those connections to have role models for our future citizens.

“Keeping our youngest members to our oldest engaged is always a fantastic thing.”

Work will be completed by the end of the week.

The cricket club’s next bucket list item will be an extended veranda added to the viewing platform and an expanded clubroom inside, allowing the venue to host events.
