A 32-year-old man is in a critical condition in Royal Darwin Hospital after a car struck him in Berrimah.

NT Police Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the driver collided with the pedestrian at the Stuart Hwy and Vanderlin Dr intersection at 7pm Thursday.

“The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and tested negative for drugs and alcohol,” he said.

“Police investigations are in their early stages, however, it is believed the pedestrian was intoxicated, wearing dark clothing and walked into the path of oncoming traffic.

“Alcohol and roads do not mix, regardless of whether you are a motorist or a pedestrian.”

An NT Health spokeswoman said the man remained in a critical condition as of 10am Friday.

Sergeant Lindner said Territory drivers needed to be vigilant for pedestrians – especially at night.

It comes just weeks after another pedestrian was struck in Tennant Creek.

The driver allegedly failed to stop or report the crash.

The pedestrian suffered minor injuries.

The Territory’s 2023 road toll currently stands at seven, with four road fatalities being pedestrians.

Three were in urban areas, which encompasses Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs.

In 2022, 12 of 52 road deaths were pedestrians.

Seven of 35 road deaths in 2021 were pedestrians.
