A lawyer representing a man accused of bashing a foreign tourist in Alice Springs holds “concern” for his client, a court has heard, as a report on the man’s condition is tendered to the court.

Facing one count of aggravated assault, Christopher Lee Maxwell, 23, had his matter back in the local court in Alice Springs on Thursday.

Mr Maxwell did not appear in court for his brief direction hearing, and has been on remand since his arrest in April in connection to the bashing of a 21-year-old Danish tourist in Alice Springs.

Representing Mr Maxwell was Jack Rabl, who told the court he held “concern” for his client as “the presentation currently makes confirming the defence position difficult”.

A section 77 report was tendered to the court Wednesday night, Mr Rabl said.

“Mr Maxwell’s presentation remains of some concern and I think I’ll be assisted by that report,” he said.

“The presentation currently makes confirming the defence position difficult.”

The court heard there had been “full disclosure” and Mr Rabl had been in contact with Mr Maxwell.

Mr Maxwell alleged to have thrown rocks at the young tourist before knocking her out earlier this year.

She had only arrived in Alice Springs the morning of the alleged assault, and was walking along South Tce when Mr Maxwell is alleged to have punched her in the face.

He is further alleged to have stomped her head when she was on the ground.

She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later left Alice Springs once she was discharged.

Mr Maxwell has not entered a plea to his charges.

In December last year on a separate matter, Mr Maxwell pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count of being armed with an offensive weapon.

The court heard he’d punched a female police officer in the head in the Coles car park in Alice Springs.

Judge Anthony Hopkins sentenced Maxwell to one month in prison, backdated to the time of his arrest, and suspended his sentence.

At the time Mr Hopkins told Mr Maxwell “you’ve got to promise to stay out of trouble for six months”.

Judge Sarah McNamara adjourned the matter to July 8, and kept Mr Maxwell on remand.
