SA's breaking news blog, The Pulse: Semi-trailer with chickens on board catches fire on the Northern Expressway

The Northern Expressway has been reopened several hours after a B-double truck caught fire this morning, killing several chickens on board.

What it takes to become a firefighter

Several chickens have been killed after the trailer they were in caught fire on the Northern Expressway this morning.

Police say the blaze broke out in the rear trailer of a B-double truck about 4am while driving on the Northern Expressway in the Andrews Farm-Munno Para area.

The truck driver, who was alerted to the flames by a passing motorist, managed to detach the burning trailer from the prime mover and was not injured.

Sadly, a number of chickens were killed in the fire and the rest will be euthanised.

The exact cause is still undetermined.

Citybound traffic was blocked for several hours, as motorists were diverted at the Angle Vale exit throughout the peak rush.

The road fully reopened about 9.30am.
