THE partner of a worker killed on the new Royal Adelaide Hospital site in 2014 is suing four companies involved in the management, design and construction of the $2.3 billion building for negligence.

Pam Gurner-Hall, the devastated partner of 54-year-old Jorge Castillo-Riffo, has launched civil action in the District Court, claiming the companies were negligent in their duty of care to the worker.

The companies are joint venture builders Hansen Yuncken and CPB Contractors, concrete structure building specialist Form 700 and scissor lift manufacturer Ahern Australia.

Mr Castillo-Riffo was fatally crushed while working on a scissor lift in November 2014.

In her statement of claim, Ms Gurner-Hall, 61, says the joint venture — known as HYLC — was responsible for the “establishment, implementation and supervision of safety practices at the new RAH”.

She claims it failed to arrange for her partner to be given training in using a scissor lift while it was parked against a balustrade and instructions about safety-related issues and hazards for that particular task.

Ms Gurner-Hall has also claimed HYLC did not “manage, co-ordinate, supervise” the task, provide a “work buddy” or have a defibrillator nearby.

She claims she has suffered psychologically since the accident, as well as financially, and is suing for an undisclosed amount of damages.

In April, the State Government announced a coronial inquest would be held into the death — which came two months after charges were dropped against HYLC and his employer SRG Building (Southern).

The four companies have not filed their defence documents.
