A man who had just bought a brand-new Toyota Camry Hybrid thought it would be a good idea to celebrate with a few drinks at the local pub on Friday. What could go wrong?

Well, it is then alleged he decided to get behind the wheel of his new car. Very bad idea.

Police pulled over the 44-year-old driver from Dernancourt on North East Rd just after 10pm and he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.145 — nearly three times over the legal limit.

The new car, which had just 29 kilometres on the clock, was impounded for 28 days.

Police also disqualified his licence for six months. He will appear in court at a later date.

The driver was pulled over by an officer as part of last week’s Operation Fatal Distraction — a five-day safety blitz that resulted in nearly 500 fines.
