POLICE are warning jetski owners to be vigilant after a rise in thefts of the vehicles across the Gold Coast.
The warning comes after two teenagers allegedly sparked an-hour long police hunt when they were spotted on a stolen jetski in Broadbeach canals about 11.15pm on Sunday.
It’s alleged police followed the pair until they dumped the watercraft in Nerang, fled and were found by the Dog Squad with sand on their feet.
A 17-year-old has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was expected to face Southport Children’s Court later this month, while a 16-year-old was assisting police with inquiries.
Gold Coast police superintendent Rhys Wildman said police had seen an increase in jetski thefts across the city.
“Most of these offences are opportunistic in nature,” he said.
“If they see something that is easily accessible or able to be stolen, that’s when the opportunity arises and they will take that opportunity.”
He urged jetski owners to secure their jetskis, including in locked garages or by investing in wheel clamps if the jetski was stored on a trailer.
