Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Plans have been revealed for a “high-quality” shopping centre in the Gold Coast’s north.

The proposed Coomera Social Harvest project is earmarked for a 11,180 sqm site on Naves Drive by Option Property Investments, a Sydney company linked to 61-year-old Egypt-born businessman Paul Samir Hanna.

The two-storey complex, which will front Kerkin Road South, will feature up to three coffee shops, a bar and restaurants, two of which would offer outdoor dining; four retail shops; a health and medical centre; a major anchor tenant, likely to be a supermarket; a gym; a car wash; and office space

A lengthy ‘vision statement’ on the project given to the council by Mr Hanna’s company describes Social Harvest Coomera as a “vibrant, community-oriented village shopping centre that addresses key service gaps in the local area” including “specialty fresh produce, diverse dining options, inclusive entertainment and a centre for health and wellness”.

“This development aims to become a central gathering place that enriches daily life, stimulates local economic activity, and contributes positively to the social and cultural fabric of the community,” the statement reads.

“We propose a thoughtfully designed precinct that brings together essential retail services, high-quality fresh food outlets, casual and fine dining establishments, that deviate away from the fast-food outlets that proliferate the local landscape.

“Dynamic entertainment spaces combined with wellbeing service providers that further foster the ‘community’ feeling.”

According to plans lodged with council, it will have 282 carparking spaces.

Option is asking council to allow the centre to operate 6am–10pm seven days a week, while also allowing a gym to operate on-site 24 hours a day.

The developer said in its statement to council that the shopping centre would promote “sustainable economic development” in the fast-growing suburb.

“In addition to enhancing local access to healthy food and social experiences, this project is envisioned as a catalyst for community connection and wellbeing,” the statement reads.

“With integrated open spaces, walkable design and family-friendly facilities, it will serve

people of all ages and backgrounds – fostering inclusion, accessibility, and a strong sense of place.

“This initiative aligns with council objectives around smart growth, liveability, and community resilience and we are committed to working collaboratively with local stakeholders to ensure the development reflects the character and needs of the community, and delivers long-term social, economic, and environmental value.

“By retaining ownership, we will ensure the longevity of the centre and the operators within.”
