A man has been charged over an alleged knife-wielding holdup in the middle of Surfers Paradise in which a car was damaged and cash was taken.

Police allege a 33-year-old man was approached by the offender, armed with the weapon, at about 3.30am on April 9 at the intersection of Ferny and Cypress Ave.

The victim was forced to hand over an amount of cash before the tyres were allegedly slashed on his car. He was not injured during the altercation.
According to police, the armed man sped off in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

Following a public appeal for information, police arrested and charged a 20-year-old Southport man with going armed so as to cause fear and driving of motor vehicle without a driver’s licence. He was initially denied police bail, however a magistrate granted him release during his first court appearance.

The man is due to face Southport Magistrates Court again on June 24.
