The people of Geelong have spoken, crowning the region’s best gym buffs.
Patrick Nolan and Kate Collins have claimed the unique title of Geelong’s top gym guy and girl respectively.
It was a tight race in the men’s category but Mr Nolan came out on top with 11 out of 157 votes.
Ms Collins received 29 out of 104 votes in the women’s category.
“I feel flattered and excited,” Ms Collins said.
“Flattered to be recognised among some pretty good competition, and excited because it goes to show what my hard work has done.”
“I remember having a spare in year 12, it was September 5th, and one of the guys was like come to the gym, and I was like ‘what is this?’.
“All these girls were doing cardio and I just wanted to do bicep curls with the boys.”
Ms Collins is a personal trainer, working at Elite Training Centre.
She said she was on a crusade against the “Instagram body.”
“I’m so passionate about wanting to teach women how not to stuff up their body,” Ms Collins said.
“It’s such a big thing, especially the young girls that are coming into the fitness industry.
“You’ve got YouTube that’s kind of launching it all, they’ve got Instagram bodies and whatnot, and a lot of them are preaching health and fitness and then really doing the opposite.”
Ms Collins said she’s so passionate about teaching people the right way to get fit because she had done it the wrong way in the past.
“When I was body building, I was eating in such an aggressive calorie deficit that there’s actually a hormonal response,” Ms Collins said
“Especially for females it just cooks you.
“I rebounded, now I feel like I’ve just been this happy genuine self since (around) 2017.”
Ms Collins passed on some words of wisdom to wannabe gym buffs.
“Everyone’s going to have crap days,” she said.
“Sometimes the best thing to do is just put some headphones in and walk into a gym and just detach from the world.”
