Police have issued a blunt warning to speeding drivers after a motorist was detected travelling 191km/h in a 100km/h zone along the Princes Hwy.
Geelong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Craig Stevens urged motorists to slow down and abide by the law as officers prepare to again flood the region’s roads this weekend.
Officers were out in force as part of Operation Compass over the unofficial Melbourne Cup long weekend.
Police detected 273 offences across the region, including four impaired drivers.
Sgt Stevens said more than 2000 breath tests were conducted.
The policing operation will resume from November 5-7.
“Our road trauma was fairly low for that period, which was very pleasing,” Sgt Stevens said.
“We are hoping that that trend continues.
“Our message is that road trauma is preventable and we don’t want to see anyone else become an unnecessary statistic.
A driver and two passengers were lucky not to become statistics when they escaped with minor injuries following a single-vehicle crash at Moriac on Tuesday afternoon.
The 25-year-old man was travelling with two male passengers along Hunts Rd when he lost control of his vehicle about 4.30pm.
Ambulance Victoria attended the scene soon after where the man’s vehicle was found on its side.
Eight emergency service vehicles were at the scene of the crash.
It is not yet known what caused the man to lose control.
A Victorian Police spokeswoman confirmed the men were taken to the Geelong University Hospital as a precaution, with no sign of serious injuries.
“The male driver and two male passengers have been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” she said.
“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.”
Colac Highway Patrol also detected a driver allegedly travelling at 126km/h in a 100km/h en route to Port Campbell.
Police said the 19-year-old male driver, who was driving his 17-year-old and 16-year-old friends, held a learner’s permit and had no accompanying fully licensed driver in the car.
He was issued multiple infringements for speed, being an unaccompanied learner driver and not displaying L plates.
The man was unable to continue his drive to Port Campbell.
Sgt Stevens said police had seen a noticeable influx in cars across the region, particularly on key tourist routes like the Great Ocean Rd.
He warned motorists to expect similar traffic volumes this weekend.
“We will see an influx of travel on our roads this weekend when people once again flock to the Bellarine and the Surf Coast,” he said.
“There was a significant increase in traffic on our roads and some stages traffic was stationary.”
Police will continue to focus on impaired driving, speed and distraction offences.
