Greater Geelong Covid cases dropping

Greater Geelong recorded 28 new cases of coronavirus as of Tuesday, as Victoria’s total number of new cases dipped below 1000 for the first time since late September.

Victoria recorded 989 new local Covid-19 cases and nine deaths linked to virus in the 24 hours to Tuesday.

Barwon South West public health unit director Professor Eugene Athan said no deaths occurred at Geelong hospital over the same period.

Prof Athan said doctors were also treating nine patients who were no longer in

their infectious period but were still experiencing the effects of Covid-19.

“In keeping with our role as a Covid streaming hospital, the inpatients come from Geelong and across the state,” he said.

“We ask the community to remain vigilant and to get tested at the earliest sign of Covid-19

symptoms or following attendance at an exposure site.”

Statewide, about 92 per cent of Victorians above the age of 16 have received one jab and 81 per cent have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

The 90 per cent double-dose vaccination rate is predicted to be achieved around November 24.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews previously flagged that there would be “no caps anywhere” beyond that date.

“There will be no density limits anywhere,” he said.

“Masks will only be required in high-risk indoor settings, such as public transport, prisons, hospitals, aged care, to give you some examples.

”I want to see 80,000 plus people at the Boxing (Day) Test on day one.

“It won’t be easy, but we are very confident, very, very confident that we will be able to deliver that.”
