An elderly man has drowned after a boating accident in Queenscliff, just days after a man was swept away in the ocean near Lorne.

It’s believed the 76-year-old Altona North man ran into trouble on a creek near Bridge St at about 9.55am on Wednesday morning.

Victoria Police said a woman who was also in the small boat was not injured.

Emergency services retrieved the victim from the water after a short search.

A nearby resident said there were five or six police cars at the scene, as well as paramedics.

He said the man was brought into the Queenscliff boat ramp.

“Eventually the police brought the body in and you could see them performing CPR on a boat,” he said.

“They were trying to do something to somebody on the inside of the boat and they came in very quickly and were applying it (CPR) on their way in.”

Another neighbour said a similar incident occurred in the area about 12 months ago.

He said the area was “safe as anything” and each day there were about 150 boats that would come of the Queenscliff boat ramp each day.

“There’s no danger here, the real danger is when they start poking up near Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale,” he said.

An investigation has been launched and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The latest incident comes after a spear fisherman went missing at Separation Creek near Lorne last week.

A police spokesman on Wednesday said there was no update in regards to the search for the man, who went missing last Thursday. Earlier in the week police divers were waiting for the right conditions to search for man, who it’s believed was wearing a weight belt to help him dive.

One user on Facebook commented that he tried to help the man and that the incident could have been avoided if there was a “check swell sign”.

As of Wednesday, police did not have an age or suburb for the missing man.
