Geelong drivers the safest in the country, study shows

Geelong has topped the list of safest drivers in the country, a study has shown.

Geelong has the safest drivers out of any city in Australia, new data has shown.

An analysis of more than 18 million kilometres logged by Rollin’ Car Insurance’s Safe’n Save app, Geelong’s drivers have come out on top as the safest in the country.

The city took out top spot ahead of Adelaide, Sunshine Coast, Newcastle and Brisbane.

According to the study’s results, Geelong took top spot with a score of 92 out of 100 by leading the way in smooth acceleration and well-executed turns, with steady driving habits helping our drivers stay in control and avoid sudden movements on the road.

Along with being the safest, Geelong was also, on average, the fifth fastest driving city, with motorists averaging 44.8km/h.

It wasn’t all good news for Geelong however, with the data finding the region’s drivers used their phones once every six trips on average, making them equal third worst in this department.

The app which collated the data assesses things like accelerating, braking, and taking corners for users, with the score dictating savings on insurance policy.

In contrast, an iSelect study found 1 in 6 Australian drivers regularly engaged in at least one dangerous driving habit.

General Manager for General Insurance Adrian Bennett said “it’s concerning to learn that a majority of Australians admit to at least one dangerous driving habit.

“The most common behaviours — speeding, driving while drowsy, and mobile phone use — are not just risky, they could also impact the validity of your car insurance in the event of an accident,” Mr Bennett said.

It comes just weeks after local police pleaded with resident to listens to their warnings to remain safe on the road.

Acting Senior Sergeant Damon Patralakis of the Geelong Highway Patrol said people aren’t listening.

“The messaging has been out for decades now around the dangers,” Mr Patralakis said.

“We continuously send out this messaging, as does the TAC, and we just want to encourage road users this year to make smart choices.

“It’s pretty frustrating.”
