The Great Ocean Road was shut down for nearly six hours after a motorcyclist died following a horror collision near Lorne.

Emergency services were called to a scene in Eastern Views just after 10.30am where police understand a motorcycle and a grey Ford Ranger towing a caravan collided.

The rider, who is yet to formally identified, died at the scene.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Ford, was uninjured.

A stretch of the Great Ocean Road was closed in both directions near Lorne following the serious collision.

According to the Department of Transport, the resulting detour is “long and will add considerable time to journeys”.

“Motorists travelling between Lorne and Fairhaven should detour using Lorne-Deans Marsh Road, the Princes Highway between Winchelsea and Waurn Ponds, and Anglesea Road to reach the Great Ocean Road,” the department said.

The closed stretch of road is the same area where a motorcyclist fell down an embankment recently.

The closure was under the control of emergency services, with the Great Ocean Road re-opening once police concluded their investigations.

Police confirmed the Great Ocean Road between Golf Links Road and Deans Marsh Road is expected to be impacted for some time.

According to Google Maps, the drive from Fairhaven to Lorne would have taken well over an hour if you left just after midday.

The closed stretch of road encompasses the same spot a motorcyclist survived falling down an embankment last week.

According to Victoria Police, the 57-year-old man lost control of his vehicle and careered down an embankment.

Eastern View is a locality between Aireys Inlet and Lorne with a population of just 35.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
