A Belmont mum gave birth to her son on the bathroom floor, only 20 minutes after she started having contractions.

Caitlin McCombe, 38, said it was a typical evening for her family on Thursday before she started to experience cramping about 9.30pm.

Her husband, Jarred McCombe, had gone out to collect a surf boat ahead of rowing training the next morning when her contractions intensified in a matter of minutes.

“I sent him a message about 9:30pm to come home and call his mum when he gets here so she could look after our two daughters,” Ms McCombe said, who was just over 40 weeks pregnant.

“Not long after I sent the message, he walked in the door and called his mum.”

Ms McCombe’s mother-in-law, Gail McCombe, arrived at the house at 9.46pm while Mr McCombe was on the phone with a triple-0 call taker.

Only four minutes later, at 9.50pm, Jock Alistair McCombe was born.

Ms McCombe was standing in their ensuite when baby Jock popped out and her mother-in-law managed to catch him.

“It was about 20 minutes from the first cramp to the baby on the floor,” Ms McCombe said.

“Jarred was getting instructions from the triple-0 call takers and they told us to put down towels underneath me.”

The ambulance arrived at 9.55pm, taking Ms McCombe and baby Jock to St John of God Hospital, where the umbilical cord was cut.

“It was a wild ride,” she said.

“I knew from my previous births I have fast labours but I wasn’t expecting it to be quite so fast.

“Jarred was at the business end at the births of our two daughters so he knew what to do.”

Ms McCombe thought she had “forgotten how painful birth was” while her contractions were intensifying.

“I thought it was just the beginning but then I felt his head was popping out very quickly,” she said.

“I knew it wasn’t just contractions but it was the birth itself.”

Ms McCombe said it was “very special” to have her husband and mother-in-law at the birth of baby Jock.

“They have a bond now (with Jock) which will be treasured forever,” she said.

Ms McCombe said she and Jock were doing “really well”.
