A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing tools from a wildlife sanctuary in Lara and driving through a gate to escape police on Saturday morning.

Officers were called to Serendip Sanctuary on Windermere Rd just after midnight after reports of a suspicious vehicle inside the property.

A police spokeswoman said the man was allegedly stealing tools, including chainsaws, from the sanctuary’s shed.

“Police attempted to intercept the car before it allegedly accelerated away at a fast rate of speed, crashing through a gate, and continuing driving,” the spokeswoman said.

Officers then found the vehicle in Carnation Crt in Norlane, about 11km away.

The man allegedly attempted to escape police, fleeing on foot and jumping through multiple properties.

“A 32-year-old Lara man was arrested at a Norlane address inside a garage about 2.30am,” the spokeswoman said.

“He remains in custody and is expected to be charged with burglary and traffic offences.”
