A security guard was undergoing surgery on Monday after he sustained a 15cm gash when he was allegedly assaulted a day earlier at Market Square.

The alleged offender, Dylon Lynch, was charged with asasult causing injury and later applied for bail in Geelong Magistrates Court.

Police prosecutor Kerrie-Ann Maroney said Mr Lynch posed an “unacceptable risk” to the community and said officers opposed his bail application.

Ms Maroney said Mr Lynch allegedly kicked the door of a cubicle inside of a bathroom in Westfield on Sunday at about 10.15am while a man was relieving himself.

After the incident, the man washed his hands and asked why Mr Lynch was kicking the door in.

Prosecution allege the man was then punched in the face on the right side of the upper lip and suffered a split.

The court heard the man then left the bathroom and asked a cleaning lady to call the police.

CCTV footage allegedly captured Mr Lynch consuming whisky and at 10.30am, he was seen entering the Myer store in Geelong where he allegedly threw a bottle of perfume causing it to smash.

At about 10.39am, police alleged Mr Lynch walked into Market Square, selected a utility knife from a store and left the shop without making any attempt to pay.

Police attended Market Square and placed him under arrest for earlier assault.

During the arrest, he allegedly resisted police which resulted in an alleged injury to a police officer’s leg, while a security guard received an alleged 15 cm laceration which resulted in surgery.

Mr Lynch’s lawyer said the alleged injuries occurred because the knives were allegedly in his pocket.

No pleas were entered and the bail application was adjourned.

Magistrate Ann McGarive remanded in Mr Lynch custody and he expected to next front court on Tuesday.
