Charles Darwin University has appointed Trevor Riley AO KC as its fifth Chancellor.

One of the Territory’s most distinguished lawyers, Mr Riley was Chief Justice of the NT Supreme Court from 2010 to 2016, and outspoken about cuts to legal aid, high imprisonment rates and addressing alcohol abuse.

He was a long term director of St John Ambulance NT, chair of the AFLNT appeals board, chair of the Menzies School of Health Research, and a member of the board of the Foundation of Alcohol Research and Education.

He authored the 2017 Riley Review into alcohol policies in the Northern Territory, which led to widespread reforms – including the soon-to-be-scrapped floor price.

Mr Riley was appointed an Officer of the order of Australia in 2021 for distinguished service to the judiciary, the law and the community.

Mr Riley said he looked forward to helping guide the university through “these challenging and uncertain times” for the sector.

“CDU is a vibrant and exciting university,” he said.

“Charles Darwin University is critical for education, training and research in the Northern Territory.

“It is highly respected within Australia’s degree and vocational education sectors and attracts international students worldwide.

“I am committed to building on these foundations and ensuring that the university continues its strategic mission.”

Chair of the Chancellor selection committee Ruth Schubert welcomed Mr Riley to the role.

“He was an outstanding candidate and brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the Northern Territory and Charles Darwin University,” Dr Schubert said.

Mr Riley will replace CDU’s outgoing Chancellor, former Chief Minister Paul Henderson, and will start in the role from July next year.
