Former Territory Chief Justice Trevor Riley appointed Officer of the Order of Australia

A LENGTHY and distinguished service to the judiciary, the law and the community has led to former Chief Justice of the NT Supreme Court, Trevor Riley, being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

A LENGTHY, distinguished service to the judiciary as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory, the law and the community spanning multiple decades has led to Trevor Riley being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 2010, which he said was a “career highlight”.

At the time of his appointment he was a Justice of the Supreme Court having been appointed to that position in 1999.

He retired as Chief Justice on July 4, 2016.

Justice Riley said he was “very pleasantly surprised” to hear of the AO.

“The things I’m most proud of is working with St John Ambulance over many years and Menzies School of Health Research,” he said.

“There’s a stack of really good community organisations I’ve worked with over the years.

“I’m really grateful to the Territory because it gives you the opportunity to do these things; I’ve been very lucky in my time here.

“Something I’m excited about right now is a legal pathways group, Bilata, where I am a coach for encouraging Aboriginal kids into university and into law.”

Justice Riley has also been chairman of the NT Alcohol and Policies and Legislation Review, Brown’s Mart Community Arts and is current chairman of the Disciplinary Appeal Tribunal, Australian Football League NT.
