A leading flight school is throwing a free information session this weekend to entice young Territorians to get their wings.

Flight Standards, alongside their training partner, Moorabbin Flying Services, have organised a two-day, online, information session aimed at targeting Territorian students.

From Sunday, attendees will be given the opportunity to hear about pilot life, the pathway to obtaining a licence, as well as ask their own questions concerning the industry.

A Flight Standards spokeswoman said the offered sessions were in response to “rapid growth” in the aviation industry.

“This sustained global demand particularly for pilots is creating excellent opportunities for newly qualified pilots across the industry, but especially here in the Top End - long known as a an excellent starting point for young pilots at the start of their career,” she said.

“To counter the inevitable movement of these pilots from initial jobs to larger businesses the general aviation charter companies and small airlines are establishing career pathways which provide unprecedented opportunities for newcomers to the industry to not only gain excellent training, but have a clear path to follow through the first few years of a pilot’s employment. “This provides excellent mentoring opportunities and training and career advancement.”

Training discussions will be centred around learning to fly while still at school, as a school subject through the VET in School program, and the completion of their commercial pilots licence after finishing school.

Year 12 students looking for pilot training for 2025 either full time or part time have also been encouraged to attend the sessions, with Flight Standards confirming further detail will be provided.

For Darwin-based attendees, Flight Standards have also offered an in-person tour visit of their Top End base in the weeks following.

The sessions will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2024 and Monday, October 28, 2024.
