Replay: Tiwi Bombers v Darwin Buffaloes - 2024-25 NTFL Round 4

Tiwi Bombers survived plenty of early Buffaloes fight and used their superior fitness late on to claim victory in a scorching NTFL midday battle.

The Bombers started slowly against a Buffaloes outfit full of running in the heat, but they found their way from the second quarter onwards.

Tiwi finally broke free in the dying moments of the match, stamping their authority with a late run of goals to win 14.7 (91) to 10.7 (67).

One of the big questions coming into the match was how Buffaloes would respond after their heavy defeat to Palmerston the week before.

And they showed what they are made of in the opening quarter as skipper Jarrod Stokes surged the ball forward.

The Double Blues were further boosted by the return of Daniel Stafford, who recently won the best and fairest in the CAFL, and gave them someone to aim at in the forward line.

But the momentum was broken when Tiwi kicked into gear in the second, using their speed and fitness to tear through the Buffaloes’ defence.

Michael Thompson was the instigator for the Bombers with his pace, while Sam Darley, Nicholas Hooker and Marlion Pickett gave them plenty of momentum through the middle.

Then came the goals, with the likes of Blake Puruntatameri, Anthony Munkara and William Munkara all getting on the board.

Buffaloes kept coming late and almost levelled the ledger through a Jarrod Stokes monster kick, which was deemed a touch after some discussion from the umpires.

But Tiwi regathered themselves again late, not wanting to risk a close one and surged again through a goal rush to take the game out of contention.

PREVIEW

Fast-starting Tiwi Bombers will be out to ensure last weekend’s defeat to Southern Districts was only a minor blemish when they face winless Darwin Buffaloes on Saturday morning.

Tiwi followed up two big wins to open the season over Wanderers and PINT by giving a good account of themselves against one of the title favourites.

They now face a Buffaloes side who have failed to fire in any of their three games so far,

And the NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the match from 11.30am on Saturday.

Sam Darley was a big ballgetter for the Bombers while Karlson Kantilla, who last year starred in the ruck, showed what he can do in front of goal.

Ashton Hams and Marlion Pickett were both missing from last week’s encounter, but could return for this encounter.

A disrupted pre-season has turned into a disappointing start to the year for the Buffaloes and they will be desperate to stem the flow of early losses.

The Double Blues had lost to PINT and Nightcliff, before they were taken apart by a Palmerston outfit that hadn’t won in more than a year.

There’s still plenty of talent in this side, including captain Jarrod Stokes and livewire forward Liam Holt-Fitz, and they shouldn’t be underestimated.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
