Christmas came early for patients and their families at Townsville University Hospital when Cowboys Braidon Burns and Harrison Edwards paid a surprise visit as part of the Cowboys in Capes program in conjunction with the Brighter Lives Foundation.

Burns said it was important to bring smiles to the faces of patients and their families in the lead up to Christmas.

“It makes us feel good. I’ve got a two year old boy, and to see him in situations like this sort of makes me feel sad to think about that.

“So to come in and put a smile on these kids’ faces, it does make you feel good, and again, shows how fortunate we are to have what we have.”

He said the pair of them got a special reaction when they walked in – even if some of the patients were not Cowboys supporters.

“Not all of them are Cowboy supporters, we try to convert them while they’re here. But it is special.

“We’re so lucky to be healthy and to play football as a job. So hopefully some of these kids look at that, and when they do get better and they get out of hospital, they can look at us for inspiration.”

Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation CEO Stephanie Naunton said having the Cowboys players visit was a special Christmas gift for patients and families.

“This has made and added a little bit of sunshine to can what can be the hardest time that families are going through.”

She said Brighter Lives always needed help from the community especially with Christmas approaching.

“We cannot do what we do today without donations and without the kindness of our community.

“So please, asking if the community can, please head to our website, head to our Facebook, and that’s where you can either give donations or give you time.

“There are multiple ways to give, and we are always looking for those donations and also that time where you can give.”
