A number of streets in Leanyer have been left flooded after severe road damage triggered a number of underground pipes and water mains to burst.
Coucal Court was blocked for hours on Thursday evening after an underground water main burst and flooded the road.
The night before, a water pipe burst on Savannah Drive – around the corner from Coucal Court.
Andrew, a Coucal Court resident, said road and water damage had become more frequent lately.
“It’s probably the 10th time in three years this has happened to our road,” he said.
“Council usually just come and fill the holes up and then it happens again.”
“But this time it looks like they might have finally done it properly.”
Andrew said his daughter noticed the damage before he did.
“My daughter told me about the damage at about 4pm,” he said.
“She couldn’t even park her car it was so flooded.”
“Then Power and Water switched off the water at about 5pm and didn’t turn back on until 1am.”
“I had to jump into my pool because I couldn’t shower.”
Andrew said fixing potholes and road damage were crucial to public safety.
“Some of the damage you see on these roads is horrendous … it’s atrocious.”
“This type of damage is bound to happen to old roads at some point.”
“You see people swerving around all sorts of road damage; it could cause serious accidents if the holes are left unfixed.”
A spokeswoman for Power and Water Corporation said it worked quickly to fix the leaks.
“We try to notify people as soon as we can that we’re going to be completing some maintenance, and we give people an estimated completion time,” she said.
“Like the roads, pipes age and eventually leak or break.”
“We do planned maintenance on pipes but you can’t plan for one to randomly break.”
She said crews would likely return today to restore the damaged road and pipes.
A spokeswoman for City of Darwin said council was not responsible for the leak.
“There is a permit in place which stipulates that Power and Water are required to not only make good the water main but also required to make good to all damaged surfaces”, she said.
