A POPULAR family-owned supermarket in Adelaide has been named the world’s best international retailer by its global peers.

The Chapleys-owned Frewville Foodland won the International Retailer of the Year excellence award at the IGA Conference in the US.

Family firm Commercial Retail Group’s director Nick Chapley was at hand to receive the annual award presented by the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA), which was founded in 1962, and operates in more than 30 countries.

Frewville won the national award last year, representing Australia in the global awards.

The award is judged on the merchandising and range of products, employee development, leadership and innovation and community involvement.

“Our vision is to be more than just a supermarket. A pleasurable environment with no self-serve checkouts,” said Spero Chapley, Nick’s son and director of CRG.

“It takes a lot of courage to compete against the less service/no range model of the duopoly and other international retailers and be different. This award is special for that reason.

“It’s also a recognition of my father’s 60 years in the industry and for the supermarket’s 260 employees.”

“At Frewville Foodland, Adelaide’s finest supermarkets, we love what we do … and now the world does too,” the retailer said in a message on its Facebook page.

“It is a proud moment for us, a South Australian family-owned business, to be recognised internationally and know that our success derives from our customers trusting us to deliver on our unwavering dedication to quality, brands, community, jobs and customer service.”

The Frewville supermarket has been transformed under the Chapleys’ “Adelaide’s Finest” branding, setting a high benchmark on supermarkets for communities.

Frewville Foodland has a lot of innovative touches — from live music on weekends to tasting displays, a massive cheese bar, organic fruit and veg stand and a bakery that specialises in European loaves and pastries cooked on-site in a hearth oven.

It also has its own kitchen and coffee bar, Mr Nick’s, and a wide selection of Asian food products normally only found in Chinatown.

Mr Chapley said sales had tripled after two years under CRG’s transformation and have more than quadrupled since.

The Frewville site has been owned by CRG since October 1989.

CRG also owns the Pasadena Foodland supermarket, which is due to be renovated this year, and the bananablue.com.au online supermarket.

Foodland CEO Con Sciacca said the awards are “never easy to win and require an absolute dedication to excellence”.

“It’s not the first time a Foodland store has won this award, and it highlights the passion and commitment to customers Foodland prides itself on.”

Drakes Golden Grove Foodland won the same award in 2014.
