Zachary Page Crum sentenced for dealing steroids in Cairns District Court

A former Cairns dive master who lost his dream job and turned to dealing steroids has been offered some sound advice from a Cairns District Court judge.

A FORMER Cairns dive master that lost his dream job and turned to supplying his training partner with steroids has escaped a custodial sentence after fronting the Cairns District Court.

Zachary Page Crum, 28, pleaded guilty to offences relating to the supply of trenbolone, Stanozolol and butanol during a five month period earlier this year before Justice Dean Morzone.

Crown legal officer Emily Thambyah told the court police had executed a search warrant at a Trinity Beach address at which Crum was present and found 33.4g of steroid substances in liquid and pill form.

Defence solicitor Bebe Mellick told the court his client “fell into” selling drugs to his friend after beginning weight training to turn around feelings of “being down” after losing his dive job.

“He was not out on the street peddling, it was to his close friends and he didn’t make any profit out of it,” he said.

In sentencing Crum on Thursday, Judge Morzone accepted an early plea of guilty and no criminal history but said there was a good reason why steroid-based drugs were illegal.

“(They are) dangerous poisons, they compromise not only personal health but also the lives of users and families,” he said.

“(Their use) leeches from emergency health services that is there for others.”

Judge Morzone imposed a 15-month jail term to be immediately suspended without supervision for 15 months.

“I accept that you have taken a different course to reflect on what you’ve done and work towards your own rehabilitation,” he said.

“I’d like to see you do a little bit more education. Pick up from where you left off in school with mathematics and information technology. I suspect you’re capable of far more at a tertiary level than what you might believe.”
