A Waratah childcare centre once plagued by a colony of flying foxes is finally opening after two years of delays.

Waratah Early Education will open its doors on January 23 in the Waratah Drive Early Childcare Centre building in Manunda.

The building, owned by the Department of Education, had been in disuse for two years with residents in the area complaining about its decrepit state.

Neighbours had previously complained the building had been plagued by a colony of spectacled flying foxes, a black mould infestation and theft, but Waratah Early Education says those issues have now been resolved.

Waratah Early Education Nominated Supervisor Ms Memory Eugenie said the centre would be ready to open its doors in three weeks.

“We’ve put in a lot of effort over the past three months and are just working on the finishing touches for when we open,” Ms Eugenie said.
The childcare centre has already started taking parents on tours and readying enrolments.
“Our number capacity is smaller which means we can have intimate and personal relationships with the families,” Ms Eugenie said.

The centre has the capacity to cater to 58 children per day.
“Our service is a branch off of Early Education so we provide a diverse range of learning that is curriculum based and child-led,” Ms Eugenie said.

Waratah Early Learning Centre Approved Provider Taylor Harris said the centre, a sister site to Earlville Early Education, had garnered a lot of attention and that many families had been put on waiting lists.

“This place has so much opportunity. The location and community around here has been amazing.”
Ms Eugenie said the community they had established in Earlville had helped them at the new centre.
“I guess we’re closer to the community and we can reach out to more as well. Being a sister centre meant we can build more on that,” Ms Eugenie said.
