The Hound Small Bar by The Hospo Group opens in Edge Hill

Whether it’s whiskey, wine or a good old fashioned cocktail, Cairns’ newest small bar, The Hound, has something for everyone.

Whether it’s whiskey, wine or a good old fashioned cocktail, The Hound Small Bar in Edge Hill has got what you’re after.

The new bar, owned by Cairns’ The Hospo Group, opened on Collins Avenue in late August and has already proved a hit with partons.

The Hospo Group chief executive Darren Barber said the idea was to expand Cairns’ small bar scene from the CBD.

“We wanted to create a 1950s style speak-easy bar in a local neighbourhood,” Mr Barber said.

“We wanted to bring the style and utilise the space as best we can, to bring this kind of calibre venue to the local neighbourhood rather than staying in the CBD.”

Hospo Group member Andrew Pare said everything about The Hound’s design was perfected to the finest detail.

“If you look around, there’s houndstooth seats and the main focus here is whiskey, so we’ve got a big, hand-selected whiskey list,” Mr Pare said.
“One of our signatures is a cocktail called The Hound Dog which is a peanut butter whiskey and pineapple drink, which is delicious.”

For those not interested in a good old fashioned, The Hound has plenty of other options available.

“If you don’t like whiskey, it’s okay, we’ve got a bit everything and the drinks menu is really, well-rounded,” he said.

Mr Barber said The Hound, was created out of a desire to create a small bar scene in Cairns.

“We’ve gone about trying to find spaces that haven’t been utilized, and really kind of resurrect those spaces, and create a different style and theme to each bar, to try and revive the Cairns night-life,” he said.

Despite opening The Hound at the end of August, The Hospo Group are already looking at their next project.

“We have to relocate Three Wolves because of the development that’s happening on Abbott Street, so in the next few weeks, we’ll start construction on the new Three Wolves which will be slightly bigger,” he said.

“We’re moving it to the corner of Spence Street and Bank Lane, near Coral Sea Brewing and The Chambers, so it’ll still have laneway access.”
