A dilapidated tenancy in the heart of Edge Hill’s foodie strip could be transformed into a trendy new boutique lounge bar if a recent planning request is given the green light.
Late last month the Hospo Group lodged a material change of use application to convert unused retail space at 122 Collins Av into a bar that will be called The Hound Small Bar.
The building is currently home to the Edge Hill Chinese Take-Away, the Edge Hill Thai and Laos Takeaway.
A third shop, owned by Grace Koo, has been vacant for some time was previously tenanted by the Gourmet Grocer and is the site proposed for The Hound Small Bar.
According to the application lodged with Cairns Regional Council the premises is well suited to use as a bar due to its proximity to three major restaurants, including Noa, Guerilla and Ozmosis.
“The tenancy is also long and narrow with only a 5m frontage, which means patron activity is well contained within the tenancy,” the application reads.
If approved, The Hound Small Bar will complement The Hospo Group’s Cairns venue portfolio which includes Three Wolves, Flamingos Tiki Bar, Wolf Lane Distillery, The Fox Small Bar and the Cabana Bar at Palm Cove.
Hospo Group co-owner Darren Barber said he and other owners Sam Kennis, Andrew Pare had been looking to establish a presence in Edge Hill almost since the launch of flagship Abbot St venue Three Wolves opened in 2016.
“This is really exciting and we really love creating new venues and the neighbourhood ones are really fun to do, we are really looking forward to it,” he said.
While keeping details of the vision for The Hound Small Bar under wraps, Mr Barber said he was going for a moody, low lit, whisky lounge vibe.
“It will be dark timbers and dark greens and, lot of whisky and a lot of spirits and great cocktails and aged meats and cheeses,” he said.
The fit out will comprise a double door entry to a vestibule, a bar service area and booths along the side wall.
A private hire booth seating area is planned towards the rear of the tenancy.
The proposed change in use from a retail outlet to a bar is considered impact assessable meaning the public now have a chance to provide feedback on the planning submission.
The new Edge Hill proposal follows the announcement of a chic new restaurant called GiGi, planned the former Botanica cafe building, however the venue is yet to open.
