AN ABBOTT Street bar is taking a risk and has announced their decision to no longer sell alcohol behind the bar.
Elixir Music Bar announced at the beginning of April that they would become a zero-alcohol behind the bar venue, taking the opportunity to promote healthier habits and introduce zero-alcohol products in its place.
Sky Rixon of Elixir Bar said they had been considering the option of going zero-alcohol behind the bar for roughly six to eight months but officially made the decision a few weeks ago.
“It was a matter of weighing up what we stand for, what enjoyment comes from our venue and the direction we want to go,” she said.
“Tuesday night was our first official night as a non-alcoholic bar and it went really well, we’re stoked with the response.
“We are a community-focused venue and we’ve seen people’s ideas of a good night out change, they want to enjoy the music and have a good time with family and friends so that made our decision a lot easier.”
Elixir Bar has hosted school assessments for music and drama and student workshops, and Ms Rixon said it was important to her to keep the venue accessible to everyone all the time.
“There was a whole range of things that helped us make the decision to stop selling alcohol,” she said.
“We considered switching to a different liquor license but that wouldn’t have enabled us to stay community-based and would put tighter rules around having kids in the venue.
“But obviously we’ve got a lot of locals and regulars that have kept us open that enjoy a drink so this was the best option for us.”
